Summary:
The Tufted Duck is a small duck species with a notably rounded head and distinct yellow eyes. The male is black on its back but has a clear white belly, its head has a purple hue and a black crest drops down at the back of its head. The female is less conspicuous being brownish with a very small crest.
Ecology:
Feeds mainly on mussels, snails and other invertebrates, also plant material. Spends much of the time diving for food.
Habitat:
Lakes, estuaries
Distribution:
Resident in most of the British Isles except south west and uplands.
